13,698 Businesses Hit as Government Unveils RE-MSME PLUS

At least 13,698 businesses were affected by Cyclone Diwah and the subsequent floods, according to complaints received by a support centre established by the Ministry of Industries. The affected enterprises include 5,639 micro, 4,636 small, 2,986 medium, and 437 large businesses, highlighting the severe impact on Sri Lanka’s MSME sector.

In response, the Government has announced a new loan scheme titled RE-MSME PLUS, scheduled to be implemented from 2026. The scheme will offer three-year loans at a 3 percent annual interest rate, with a six-month grace period. Micro enterprises can access up to Rs. 250,000, while small and medium enterprises are eligible for loans of up to Rs. 1 million.

Several existing MSME loan schemes are to be consolidated under RE-MSME PLUS, subject to Cabinet approval.
