Allegations of large-scale corruption in Sri Lanka’s water sector have emerged, focusing on multi-million-dollar contracts awarded to Chinese state-owned companies. The People’s Movement against Corruption (PMAC) has demanded an urgent Government probe, citing RTI disclosures that reveal inflated costs, unsolicited bids, and opaque local joint ventures.
The $229.5 million Gampaha, Attanagalla, and Minuwangoda Integrated Water Supply Scheme alone exceeded its original estimate by 34.8%, while other major projects, including the Jaffna-Kilinochchi and Ambatale schemes, show similar irregularities. Past COPE reports highlight billions in unrecovered advances and mismanaged public funds.
PMAC warns that without immediate forensic audits and criminal investigations, these procurement failures threaten Sri Lanka’s water security in 2025, strain the national budget, and undermine public confidence in state institutions.
