Sri Lanka Customs Revenue Surges 65% despite Past Corruption Allegations”

Sri Lanka Customs has achieved a dramatic 65 percent year-on-year increase in revenue, collecting LKR 2,260 billion in the first eleven months of 2025 compared to LKR 1,367 billion during the same period last year. November alone saw collections of LKR 245 billion, surpassing the monthly target despite disruptions caused by Cyclone Ditwah.

Analysts attribute the surge to stricter enforcement, improved valuation methods, and a rebound in import volumes following the 2022 economic crisis. While the spike has turned Customs into one of the Treasury’s top revenue contributors, critics question past inefficiencies and the potential for sustained performance. The sudden year-on-year growth raises concerns about whether previous underperformance reflected systemic lapses and malpractice, or if the current success represents a genuine institutional turnaround. The figures underscore the department’s pivotal role in supporting Sri Lanka’s fiscal recovery under IMF-supported programs.
