Cyclone Floods May Wipe Out Rs 300–900 Billion Economy

Crisis-hit Sri Lanka risks crippling economic losses after recent cyclone and flood disasters. According to First Capital Holdings’ MD Dilshan Wirasekara, direct losses are likely to reach 1–3 percent of GDP equivalent to around Rs 300–900 billion (US$ 200 million–2.9 billion).

When infrastructure damage, agricultural losses, supply-chain disruption and reconstruction needs are included, actual costs could soar to Rs 500–1,440 billion.

Wirasekara urged the government and private sector to issue a large-scale, Government-backed Infrastructure Bond delivered via the Colombo Stock Exchange to finance rebuilding and support businesses reeling from the shock.

He stressed that small-scale corporate finance tools are inadequate; only bold, large-ticket capital markets instruments can address the scale of devastation.
