Sri Lanka has formally requested USD 200 million in rapid assistance from the IMF as the country grapples with the extensive damage caused by Cyclone Ditwah. IMF Mission Chief Evan Papageorgiou confirmed that authorities have sought SDR 150.5 million under the Rapid Financing Instrument, with the request now awaiting Executive Board approval. The appeal comes just as Sri Lanka prepares to receive the sixth tranche USD 350 million of its Extended Fund Facility in mid-December.
The dual financing needs highlight both the scale of recovery requirements and the government’s mounting fiscal pressures. Sri Lanka is also expected to face strict scrutiny on IMF benchmarks after setbacks in reserves accumulation, tax performance, and currency stability. With billions required for compensation and reconstruction, questions continue to grow over whether the government can maintain reform commitments while addressing an escalating humanitarian emergency.
