Two o U.S. Air Force C-130J Super Hercules aircraft arrived in Sri Lanka to support the Cyclone Ditwah relief effort, marking an unusually high-profile American military presence. The deployment publicly highlighted by the U.S. Embassy with full diplomatic and media visibilitycontrasts sharply with previous U.S. disaster-relief missions in Sri Lanka that were conducted with little or no publicity.
Ambassador Julie Chung and senior Sri Lankan officials welcomed the aircraft at Katunayake Air Base, with U.S. Indo-Pacific Command personnel immediately preparing to move emergency supplies to affected regions. The U.S. also recently provided $2.1 million in airlift-support equipment and announced $2 million in humanitarian assistance within days of the cyclone.
Analysts note that the evident publicity reflects a shift in Washington’s approach, aligning humanitarian support with broader strategic visibility in the Indian Ocean. The deployment underscores both relief needs and emerging geopolitical messaging.
