The European Union (EU) has allocated €1.8 million in emergency assistance to support Sri Lanka’s communities affected by recent devastating floods and landslides. The funding aims to provide urgent relief to the most vulnerable, including safe shelter, basic necessities, and support for rebuilding livelihoods.
Of the total, €500,000 will be channelled through the Disaster Response Emergency Fund of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. EU Commissioner for Preparedness, Crisis Management and Equality, Hadja Lahbib, emphasized that the aid is meant to help families meet immediate needs and recover from the disaster.
In addition to financial support, the EU is providing in-kind assistance via the Civil Protection Mechanism. Germany is supplying 4,600 shelter items, France is sending over 3,400, and Italy is deploying engineering experts. The EU has also activated its Copernicus Emergency Management Service to produce rapid disaster maps, enhancing response efficiency.
This contribution forms part of the EU’s €87 million humanitarian aid for the Asia-Pacific region in 2025.
