Sri Lanka has proposed the establishment of a nationwide electric vehicle charging network with Chinese assistance, as part of its efforts to promote green mobility. The proposal was presented by Foreign Minister Wijitha Herath during discussions with Chinese Ambassador Qi Zhenhong at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Minister Herath noted the steady increase in electric vehicle imports, particularly from China, and outlined plans to introduce electric buses in the near future. He requested that China consider providing charging stations as a donation to support the transition to electric transport.
Ambassador Qi responded positively and said the proposal would be conveyed to the Chinese government. The meeting also addressed urgent infrastructure needs following recent floods, including damage to railway tracks and bridges. China has indicated it will assess cyclone-related losses and explore broader assistance options for Sri Lanka’s recovery efforts.
