India Doubles Housing Aid for Cyclone-Hit Sri Lanka

India has doubled financial assistance for three rural housing projects in Sri Lanka’s Northern and Southern Provinces, benefiting more than 1,550 low-income families affected by rising construction costs and cyclone damage. The revised support increases funding per house to Rs. 1 million under the Gram Shakthi housing initiatives, following a request from the Sri Lankan government.

The decision was formalised on 30 December 2025 through an exchange of diplomatic letters between Indian High Commissioner Santosh Jha and senior Sri Lankan officials. The projects follow an owner-driven construction model, allowing families to build homes independently with state oversight.

The enhanced assistance comes amid ongoing recovery efforts after Cyclone Ditwah and Sri Lanka’s 2022 economic crisis. India has already completed nearly 50,000 houses across the island and is implementing additional housing and reconstruction projects under its broader development cooperation framework, reinforcing its role as a key regional partner in Sri Lanka’s recovery.
