Sri Lanka to Pilot Smart Meters country wide after CEB unbundling in 2026

Sri Lanka plans to roll out a nationwide pilot program for smart meters in early 2026 as part of the National Electricity Policy’s digitalization push. The initiative aims to provide real-time monitoring of electricity consumption, reduce technical and commercial losses, and enable more accurate billing.

The CEB and successor entities will collaborate with international technology providers to deploy automated meter reading systems in urban and semi-urban regions first. Officials believe that digital data platforms will enhance grid stability, support demand-side management, and provide consumers with better insights into usage patterns.

The pilot is expected to cover approximately 50,000 households initially, with expansion contingent on successful deployment and integration into the National System Operator’s monitoring framework. Experts say that while smart meters can reduce losses and improve efficiency, careful attention to cybersecurity and consumer privacy will be essential.

If successful, the program could pave the way for dynamic tariffs and more efficient energy management across the country.
