The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the Renewable Energy Resources Development Plan 2025–2030, a key policy framework aimed at meeting 70 percent of Sri Lanka’s electricity demand from renewable sources by 2030 and supporting the country’s goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.
The plan, submitted by Energy Minister Eng. Kumara Jayakody, was developed by the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority in line with national renewable energy policy and legal requirements under the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority Act of 2007.
According to Cabinet Spokesman Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, the framework focuses on prioritising land for renewable projects, setting implementation timelines, developing a national Renewable Energy Map, and establishing Renewable Energy Gardens. It also includes floating solar power projects to diversify generation and reduce land constraints.
Stakeholder consultations were conducted during the planning process to address environmental and social concerns, with further details to be shared at a future briefing
