Chinese Expertise Triples Pineapple Output, Boosts Mango Exports in Sri Lanka

Farmers in Sri Lanka’s Colombo, Kurunegala, and Anuradhapura districts have recorded dramatic gains in fruit production after adopting cultivation practices guided by Chinese experts, the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) reported. Pineapple yields have tripled to 55 tons per hectare through high-density planting, while export-grade mango production surged to 90 percent, thanks to advanced pruning and fruit bagging techniques.

The results stem from a two-year collaborative project between Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Agriculture, China’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, and the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences (CATAS), supported by FAO. The initiative also doubled tissue-cultured seedling production while reducing costs by 30–40 percent. A new state-of-the-art Banana Tissue Culture Laboratory now supplies disease-free, high-yield planting materials across three provinces.

Ambassador Qi Zhenhong emphasized that technology transfer strengthens farmers’ livelihoods, while FAO’s Vimlendra Sharan highlighted its role in creating a resilient and high-quality fruit value chain for the future
