Colombo Hosts IRONMAN 70.3 to Boost Tourism Drive

Sri Lanka will host the IRONMAN 70.3 Colombo triathlon on February 22 at Port City Colombo, attracting nearly 1,000 athletes from over 49 countries. Organized by Serendib Multisport, the event is expected to generate high-value tourism and international media exposure.

The race anchors a week of activities including an international lifestyle expo from February 19 21 and an IRONKIDS event for children aged 3–14. Officials say sports tourism typically results in longer stays and higher visitor spending, benefiting hotels, restaurants, and local businesses.

The event also supports the broader #ActiveColombo initiative aimed at making the city more walkable and globally competitive. Organizers believe the triathlon will enhance Colombo’s reputation as a premier South Asian sporting destination while complementing Sri Lanka’s Digital Nomad visa programme designed to attract long-term remote workers.

Post-race travel opportunities across the island are expected to further stimulate tourism earnings.
