Cyclone Ditwah Causes Minor Disruptions, Sri Lanka Tea Production Unharmed

Cyclone Ditwah caused limited disruptions to Sri Lanka’s tea industry, with no reported manufacturing losses, the Colombo Tea Traders’ Association (CTTA) confirmed. Key roads in Uva and Central Province were temporarily affected, but harvesting and transportation are gradually returning to normal, aided by temporary access routes.

Tea auctions in Colombo will continue, with the December auction rescheduled to the last week of the month to maintain financial flows for producers, including smallholders. Some exporters’ offices and warehouses experienced minor flooding, resulting in damage to tea bagging machinery, which is now being restored.

From January to October, Sri Lanka produced 220.97 million kilograms of tea, surpassing last year’s output. The CTTA highlighted the industry’s resilience, noting past successes during the COVID-19 pandemic and economic crises, when production and exports continued uninterrupted.

Comprising key stakeholders from plantations, factories, exporters, and smallholders, the CTTA reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring Ceylon Tea reaches international markets, emphasizing collaboration and continued efforts to overcome natural and logistical challenges
