Officials warn that the devastation wrought by Cyclone Ditwah may inflict Rs. 210–320 billion in economic damages, striking at the heart of key sectors such as agriculture, fisheries, transport, utilities, and supply networks.
Hundreds of thousands of hectares of farmland and numerous fishing livelihoods have been destroyed, while roads, bridges, power lines and water-treatment systems lie damaged — threatening food security and basic services nationwide.
In response, the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) has reaffirmed its readiness to deploy fiscal, monetary and foreign-exchange buffers to stabilise the economy.
With recovery efforts underway through a new disaster-relief fund and industry-wide damage reporting, the next few weeks are critical. Analysts warn: delays or disruptions could deepen economic hardship and unsettle the fragile post-crisis rebound.
