Sri Lanka’s economy is staring at a massive reconstruction bill following the devastating floods and landslides triggered by Cyclone Ditwah, with rough damage estimates from informed sources pointing to an economic hit of LKR 100–300 billion. Although official figures are still unavailable, early field reports indicate 15,000–20,000 homes destroyed, widespread displacement, and severe damage to roads, bridges and rail lines.
Agriculture, fisheries and tourism key pillars of rural income and foreign exchange — have suffered heavy setbacks, raising concerns about near-term GDP losses. Emergency responders report hundreds of welfare centres operating at full capacity as thousands await relief.
Economists warn that the size of the shock could strain the Budget and slow recovery unless rapid relief, transparent damage verification and urgent reconstruction are prioritised. The government is expected to begin detailed assessments in the coming days
