Gangaramaya Temple to Become Colombo Tourism Icon

The historic Gangaramaya Temple in Colombo is set for a transformative upgrade with the Temple City Project, aiming to make it a world-class cultural and tourist destination. Located in Colombo 2, the temple houses sacred relics, rare manuscripts, antiques, and the iconic Seema Malakaya, designed by Geoffrey Bawa.

The Rs. 600 million initiative, part of the Colombo City Tourism Attraction Enhancement Program, began in late 2025 and is expected to be completed by 2027. Key features include the Kaladupatha Cultural Events Centre, eco-friendly infrastructure, a scenic Beira Lake jogging and pedestrian track, and landscaped public spaces.

Under the guidance of Chief Incumbent Dr. Kirinde Assaji, Western Province Governor Hanif Yusoof, and Dr. Dulan Hettiarachchi, the project aims to blend heritage, leisure, and sustainability. Once completed, the Gangaramaya Temple precinct will become a landmark of global significance, showcasing Sri Lanka’s spiritual, cultural, and ecological heritage while boosting Colombo’s international tourism profile.
