Government Pledges Strong Push to Keep Colombo Port Regionally Competitive

The Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the Port of Colombo through expansion, technology adoption, and international partnerships, positioning the ports sector as a key driver of economic growth.

Speaking at the Terminal Technology and Trade Engagement 2026 in Colombo, Ports and Civil Aviation Minister Anura Karunathilaka said the Port of Colombo remains South Asia’s leading transshipment hub and is undergoing significant transformation to enhance efficiency and reliability. He stressed the need to improve productivity across existing infrastructure while attracting foreign investment through public-private partnerships.

Sri Lanka Ports Authority Chairman Admiral (Retd.) Sirimevan Ranasinghe highlighted the importance of digitalisation, cybersecurity, and skills development, noting growing collaboration with US-based terminal technology providers. He also emphasised sustainability and automation as future priorities.

Officials said international technical support, including assistance from the Colombo Plan Maritime Advisory Program, is playing a vital role as Sri Lanka works to position Colombo as a major Asian maritime hub.
