Iiand, China Step Up, but Sri Lanka Seeks Balanced Rebuild

Sri Lanka faces parallel challenges of rescue and long-term recovery as India and China intensify engagement following Cyclone Ditwah. India’s Operation Sagar Bandhu has delivered 53 tonnes of relief supplies, deployed rescue specialists, helicopters, and medical teams, and restored access routes in several affected districts.

China’s support has centred on financial aid, including US$100,000 from the Red Cross Society of China and local embassy-linked donations, with further official assistance expected during the reconstruction phase.

Officials say balancing immediate lifesaving operations with transparent long-term financing will be crucial. Analysts warn that while India dominates emergency response,

China traditionally shapes the rebuilding stage through large-scale infrastructure funding, creating potential strategic dependencies.

Colombo is expected to outline a multi-source reconstruction framework to ensure resilience, transparency, and debt sustainability.Sri Lanka’s challenge now is to use all available help without surrendering future autonomy.
