IMF Board to Decide on Sri Lanka FRI

The Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund is scheduled to meet on December 19 to consider Sri Lanka’s request for US$200 million under the Rapid Financing Instrument (RFI), following damage caused by Cyclone Ditwah in late November.

The emergency request comes amid delays in the fourth review of Sri Lanka’s Extended Fund Facility programme, which has been postponed due to a sharp deterioration in the fiscal outlook. Government spending for next year is expected to rise by at least Rs. 500 billion, significantly altering the budget framework underpinning IMF targets.

An IMF mission is now expected in January 2026 to renegotiate a revised staff-level agreement reflecting the new fiscal conditions. While the RFI carries no formal reviews and is disbursed upfront, analysts note that IMF scrutiny of Sri Lanka’s broader reform commitments under the EFF is expected to continue.
