India Intensifies Military Diplomacy as Army Chief Visits Sri Lanka

India’s Chief of Army Staff, General Upendra Dwivedi, will undertake a two-day official visit to Sri Lanka from December 1–2, marking a renewed push to strengthen bilateral defence cooperation.

The Indian Army said the visit reinforces New Delhi’s Neighbourhood First policy and aims to boost training, joint exercises, and operational coordination between the two armies. General Dwivedi is expected to meet Sri Lankan political and military leaders to discuss regional security concerns, particularly in the increasingly contested Indo-Pacific and Indian Ocean Region.

The visit comes at a sensitive geopolitical moment, with Sri Lanka recently signing a new defence cooperation pact with the United States while simultaneously expanding commercial ties with China. New Delhi is keen to ensure it remains Colombo’s closest strategic partner as major powers compete for influence in the region.

India has intensified cross-service engagement, including the Indian Navy Chief’s visit to Colombo earlier this year.
