Sri Lanka’s tourism revival received a timely lift yesterday as the luxury cruise ship Mein Schiff 6 docked at Colombo Port carrying more than 2,000 international visitors. This marks the first major tourist arrival since last week’s disaster, signalling that Sri Lanka remains open and safe for travellers.
Over 1,600 passengers disembarked for excursions to Galle, Colombo, Kalutara and Madu Oya, with 72 coaches and 30 vans deployed for transport. Tourism officials said the visit demonstrates strong operational resilience and growing confidence among global cruise operators.
The ship will proceed to Hambantota for another day of excursions. Industry leaders including Sri Lanka Tourism Chairman Buddhika Hewawasam and Harbour Master Nirmal de Silva were present to welcome the vessel. Authorities say increasing cruise arrivals will be essential to reviving tourism-linked livelihoods and restoring economic momentum.
