Sri Lanka’s MSME sector has suffered extensive damage following Cyclone Ditvah and floods, with 13,698 businesses affected, according to initial assessments by a special support centre under the Ministry of Industries. The affected enterprises include 5,639 micro, 4,636 small, 2,986 medium-scale, and 437 large-scale businesses, industry leaders said.
CFMSME President Mahendra Perera estimated direct losses to MSMEs between Rs. 50 billion and Rs. 85 billion, warning that prolonged shutdowns have severely eroded cash flows and pushed many firms deeper into default, with over 60 percent already classified as NPL holders.
The Government has announced Rs. 200,000 in relief assistance for disaster-affected industries and compensation of up to Rs. 5 million for physical damage, though business groups stress that speed and transparency in disbursement will be critical to prevent permanent closures and job losses.
