Power Tariff Proposal Triggers Industry Alarm

The Ceylon Electricity Board has sought a 13.56% electricity tariff increase for April to June 2026, citing a projected Rs. 15,847 million deficit. The proposal, now before the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka, aims to stabilize finances and ensure supply reliability.

Projected generation for the quarter stands at 4,578 GWh, with hydro contributing 1,218 GWh, thermal 1,957 GWh, and other renewables 1,402 GWh. Electricity sales are estimated at 4,230.3 GWh, including supplies to the Lanka Electricity Company Ltd.

Manufacturers warn the hike will inflate production costs and weaken export competitiveness. The government argues that cost-reflective pricing aligns with commitments under the International Monetary Fund reform program. The regulator’s decision is expected to shape both industrial performance and the broader economic recovery trajectory.
