Sri Lanka Advances Major Transmission Project to Boost Renewable Energy

The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) is set to move forward with the long-awaited Norochcholai–Wariyapola Transmission Development Project, aimed at strengthening Sri Lanka’s electricity network and maximizing renewable energy integration in the North Western Province.

The initiative, estimated at Rs. 24.06 billion, will establish a high-capacity transmission corridor between Puttalam and Wariyapola, alleviating network congestion and improving system reliability.

Once completed, it will enable the absorption of over 750 MW of wind and solar power into the national grid, supporting the country’s target to expand renewable energy generation by 2030. Officials highlight that the project will benefit local communities by ensuring a more stable electricity supply, encouraging clean energy investment, and fostering economic growth in one of the nation’s most promising renewable energy regions. Funding discussions are underway with the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) to finance the development.
