Sri Lanka has granted sweeping tariff concessions to the United States in exchange for a reduction in US reciprocal tariffs on Sri Lankan goods to 20%, down from a proposed 30%. The agreement covers 1,161 industrial and 42 agricultural Sri Lankan products, many of which will face zero reciprocal tariffs, though standard MFN duties still apply.
In return, Sri Lanka will allow a large share of US industrial goods to enter its market duty-free and has committed to purchasing US$800 million worth of US energy products. Despite the scale of the deal, the government has not publicly detailed its terms or mitigation measures.
Economists warn that prolonged silence and slow policy follow-through could weaken export gains and expose domestic industries to heightened competition, calling for greater transparency and faster implementation.
