Sri Lanka Secures Global Technical Help for Stolen Asset Recovery

Sri Lanka has received fresh support from the World Bank and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime to recover assets believed to have been illegally transferred to foreign jurisdictions. Senior officials of the Stolen Asset Recovery Initiative (StAR) met Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara and agreed to provide technical and expert assistance under the Proceeds of Crime Recovery Act.

The support will extend to agencies including the Bribery Commission, the Attorney General’s Department, the Financial Intelligence Unit, and the Police Proceeds of Crime Division. A dedicated task force is also being considered to strengthen coordination and ensure efficient implementation.

StAR will additionally assist in refining key laws such as the Anti-Corruption Act and the Assets and Liabilities Act. The initiative aims to help Sri Lanka trace, freeze, and repatriate wealth held abroad that is suspected to have originated from corruption.
