Sri Lanka to Seek Global Aid through Donor Conference

The government plans to convene an international donor conference to mobilise assistance for post-cyclone reconstruction, Foreign Affairs Minister Vijitha Herath confirmed. The move will follow the completion of a comprehensive needs assessment currently being conducted by the World Bank with support from local agencies.

Cyclone Ditwah, which struck on November 28, caused widespread flooding and landslides, killing over 600 people and inflicting an estimated US$6–7 billion in damages. Despite emergency assistance from countries including India, the United States, China, Japan, and others, Sri Lanka has so far secured only about US$170 million, roughly 17% of the estimated requirement.

The government has also established the Rebuilding Sri Lanka Fund, which has raised Rs. 3.4 billion domestically. Meanwhile, the UN and humanitarian partners have launched a US$35.3 million appeal to support vulnerable communities through April 2026.
