Sri Lanka Tourism Chairman Buddhika Hewawasam yesterday said the industry’s strong performance in 2025 is expected to carry into next year, with projections of three million tourist arrivals and $5 billion in revenue for 2026.
He confirmed that Sri Lanka surpassed its previous 2018 tourist arrival record on 29 December, marking a historic recovery after years of economic and external shocks. The country is expected to close 2025 with around 2.35 million arrivals and tourism earnings between $3 and $4 billion.
Hewawasam noted that December 2025 will record the highest monthly arrivals, despite disruptions caused by Cyclone Ditwah. He said the sector rebounded quickly, with no tourist casualties or complaints, reinforcing global confidence in Sri Lanka as a safe destination.
Tourism, he stressed, remains vital to foreign exchange earnings, job creation, and overall economic recovery.
