World Bank Approves $50m Boost for Sri Lanka Digitisation

The World Bank has approved a US$50 million project to support Sri Lanka’s digital transformation, aiming to modernise public services, strengthen governance, and boost the technology sector. The initiative includes an integrated online citizen services portal, secure data-sharing systems across government agencies, a digital document locker, and a scalable government cloud platform.

The project also targets private sector growth through start-up accelerators, support for mid-sized IT firms, and programmes to encourage female entrepreneurship, with an estimated US$10 million in private investment expected over time. Training initiatives will help citizens and public servants adapt to digital service delivery.

Implemented by GovTech Sri Lanka in collaboration with the Ministry of Digital Economy, the project also seeks to enhance disaster preparedness and emergency response through real-time data systems.

The World Bank stressed that strong monitoring and accountability mechanisms will be essential to ensure effective implementation and sustainable outcomes.
