Sri Lanka has secured a €8 million grant from the European Union (EU) to advance sustainable rubber cultivation under the new ‘Agri-Green Initiatives for Green Economic Growth’ project. The programme, approved by the Cabinet on Monday, will be implemented across major rubber-growing provinces including Sabaragamuwa, Western, Uva, Eastern, Southern, Central and North-Central regions.
Developed jointly by the Ministry of Plantation and Community Infrastructure Facilities, the Rubber Development Department, and the Rubber Research Institute, the project aims to strengthen environmentally responsible production, boost food security, and promote green economic growth.
The EU has appointed the German development agency GIZ as the project’s lead implementing partner. The initiative also prioritises youth and women’s participation to encourage inclusive, climate-resilient growth within rubber production chains.
The proposal was submitted by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in his capacity as Minister of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development
