The United Nations has begun a Joint Rapid Needs Assessment in partnership with Sri Lanka’s Disaster Management Centre (DMC) to gauge the full impact of Cyclone Ditwah and guide targeted relief efforts. The UN system is analysing geospatial data and coordinating ground-level data collection to produce a comprehensive picture of the damage.
Through the Humanitarian Country Team (HCT), UN agencies and humanitarian partners are supporting national authorities in assessing urgent needs in food security, agriculture, nutrition, water, sanitation, health, education, protection, and shelter. Meanwhile, agencies are already delivering emergency supplies, including safe drinking water, hygiene kits, shelter materials, therapeutic foods, micronutrient powders, and maternity and dignity kits.
The UN said these assessments will help shape recovery priorities and ensure that assistance reaches the most affected communities efficiently. Frequent HCT briefings and updates will continue as the country moves towards early recovery.
