TISL Calls for Full Transparency in Cyclone Relief Spending

Transparency International Sri Lanka (TISL) yesterday urged the Government to ensure strict transparency and accountability in the handling of public funds allocated for Cyclone Ditwah relief, warning that past disaster responses were weakened by mismanagement and delays.

TISL welcomed President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s announcement of Rs. 30 billion in emergency funding and the lifting of bureaucratic restrictions to speed up district-level response efforts. It also acknowledged the creation of a special reconstruction fund, but stressed that its credibility depends on gender diversity, civil society representation, and complete financial disclosure.

Civil society groups recently met with the President requesting better coordination, Tamil-language communication, and smoother facilitation of incoming aid. TISL added that responsible behaviour from both officials and citizens is essential to prevent misuse of relief funds. The organisation reaffirmed its commitment to supporting recovery efforts that uphold transparency and protect public resources.
